County Line Restaurant and BB-Q

The Legend....

The year was 1930, the location, a smoke-filled club known as a "speakeasy" in northeast Oklahoma City. A "speakeasy" was a place where you could go to drink, gamble, and for a price, spend an evening in the company of some very accommodating women. The club, which is now known as The County line Restaurant, was frequented by a certain playboy. One fateful night the playboy spotted an attractive woman standing by the fireplace. He decided she need his company and he began a conversation with her. One flirt led to another as he made his intentions clear, what the playboy did not know was that the attractive woman was very married to a very jealous man. The jealous husband spotted the playboy hovering around his wife and flew into a fit of rage. The husband produced a gun and approached the playboy. The playboy, not knowing who the man was, ignored him. Furious, the husband pointed the gun and fired, murdering the playboy where he stood.

These days the County line Restaurant is known for its good BBQ and warm atmosphere. The customers, however, are not aware of what happens late at night when the place is closed. Ask a number of the employees and they will tell you about their experiences with the ghost they call "Russell". They believe this is the spirit of that same playboy that was murdered by the fireplace all those decades ago. Employees will tell stories of voices around corners, coffee cups flying off the drain racks in the kitchen or the wine glass rack above the bar shaking. "Russell" has never hurt anyone, they like to think he is just having his fun with them...at their expense. However, no one wants to be the last one to leave for the night. Next time you go to the County line remember this, your cozy, private little table for two may not be as private as you think.- Todd Hoagland.
