Tuesday evening at 9:00 Jane came home to her one bedroom cottage after a day of hard work at the office. Her boss had been nagging her to finish her reports on time and she knew there was no way she would get the raise she needed to pay next months rent. But right now all she wanted to do was sleep. She climbed under the covers and began to drift off. Suddenly she awoke to the sound of her bedroom door opening.  She could hear heavy footsteps across the floor then suddenly she felt an evil presence climb on top of her, she could feel hands and pressure on her body. She couldn’t move, and breathing became difficult, she thought she would surly die! A very short time passed by but the entity eventually withdrew from her presence Jane jumped up in a panic and turned on every light in the house. She called her brother and told him everything that took place. ”Maybe you are just imagining things, go back to bed,” he said, but Jane couldn’t fall asleep again for the rest of the night. As she lay in her bed thinking about if it was to come back or if it was it a ghost, what or who it was and of course, is she going crazy?

Was Jane dreaming? Or is there a different explanation?

Sleep Paralysis is a sleep disorder that inhibits one’s ability to move their arms, legs or entire body either just before sleep or upon waking. It is not uncommon that hallucinations accompany the paralysis.  Hallucinations can include but are not limited to: feelings of terror, feeling a presence in the room, typically evil or malevolent. Hearing footsteps or voices, sensation of being held down, strangled, including seeing shadows or images of people in the room. Each case is different.

Sleep paralysis is also known as Hypnagogic paralysis (before sleep) or more commonly Hypnopompic Paralysis (upon waking). This means that a person is awake but their brain waves are still functioning in the REM stage as if they were asleep. This state can last from a few seconds to up to two minutes before a person returns to sleep or becomes fully awake again.

Many people suffer from sleep paralysis. In fact most people will experience sleep paralysis once or twice in their lives. But what makes certain people more susceptible than others? Not much is known about the causes of sleep paralysis but stress can be a major factor, there is also a strong correlation between those with other sleep problems or disorders and sleep paralysis. A lack of melatonin in the body is also said to produce sleep paralysis. Melatonin is a hormone that is secreted by the brain and aids in sleep. Melatonin can also be found in foods such as rice. Studies show that the levels of melatonin in a person’s body decline as a person grows older, and they may take supplements to increases their levels. As always, it is very important to talk to a doctor before taking any supplements!

Hearing about   people complaining of awakening at night and not being able to move, or being held down by someone is a very common occurance in the paranormal field. This is a very frightening experience and it is important to know what is going on in the person’s life before jumping to conclusions of demons or malevolent spirits.

If you think you are a victim of possible sleep paralysis condition or your paranormal related activity centers on your sleep patterns, you should consult a sleep specialist and it is also a good idea to evaluate ones lifestyle and to ask themselves some the following questions:

v    How much stress do I have in my life?

v    Am I eating right?

v    Have I suffered any traumatic events in the past that could be contributing to     stress in my life?

v    Am I afflicted with any other sleep problems or disorders?

v    Rate your sleep patterns 1 through 10. With 10 being a good nights rest. Please contact us if you would like more information.

These are questions that everyone who experiences nighttime or sleep patterned hauntings within their home. It is important that people understand that not all things that cannot be explained are “ghosts”.

If you are experiencing unexplainable events in your home we recommend that you start a daily journal of your experiences. This will overall help investigators get a better understanding of your case. Reputable teams do NOT enter your home without taking consideration for the personal welfare of your family. It is important that you trust the team you choose enough to allow them into your personal home life. Investigating is not a numbers game. There are many teams out there who seem to be rather busy with conducting investigations. But don’t be deceived.   Allowing quality teams into your home is something to consider before you jump to conclusions that your home is full of ghosts. The psychological impact hauntings have on home owners are ignored by the majority of teams all across the globe, we are working to eliminate this stereotype within the investigative field.
